Join this 8 Week Sessions at our Calgary Studio!

What: Intermediate-Advanced Modern with Alli George

Modern dance is abstract art through movement. We will focus on technique using exercises on the floor, travelling through space, and in the centre. Drawing from the techniques developed my Martha Graham, José Limón, Merce Cunningham, and Lester Horton we will explore the use of weight, space, and time as well as creativity and artistic self-expression. Emphasis is also placed on movement efficiency, musicality, and safe body alignment. We will dance barefoot but socks are welcome for the warm up and layers are encouraged (especially for floorwork).

Alli George (she/her)

Alli is a Certified Personal Trainer (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology), dance educator, and founder of Extension Dance and Kinesiology. She brings together her lifelong love of dance and her expertise in biomechanics, musculoskeletal anatomy, and injury prevention to support dancers, athletes, and everyday movers throughout Calgary.

Alli holds a diploma in Exercise Science (Lethbridge Polytechnic), a BA in Dance (University of Calgary), and a MSc in Kinesiology specializing in sports medicine (University of Calgary). She has been a dance educator since 2005 and a certified personal trainer since 2008.

Passionate and deeply invested in creating safe, enjoyable, and accessible movement experiences for individuals of all ages and abilities, Alli strives to make dance and fitness accessible to everyone. Through Extension Dance & Kinesiology, she continues to blend artistry with evidence-based movement practices and empowers others to move with knowledge, intention, and joy.

About Extension Dance and Kinesiology

Extension Dance & Kinesiology was created from a simple belief: movement should be informed, empowering, and enjoyable. For Alli George, founder of Extension, dance educator, and certified personal trainer of over two decades, Extension grew out of her desire to share that experience with others and to create opportunities for dancers and movers to learn how their bodies work, with a focus on biomechanics, alignment, proper form, efficient movement, and a deeper connection to their own physicality.

Her work is rooted in a lifelong love of movement that began with various sports in her childhood and when she first stepped into a studio at age ten in Lethbridge and discovered a passion for dance that would shape her future. As Alli grew as a dancer, she became increasingly curious about how the body works, how injuries happen, and how movement can be both expressive and safe. This curiosity led her to pursue formal training in both exercise science and dance. She earned a diploma in Exercise Science from Lethbridge Polytechnic (formerly Lethbridge College), followed by a BA in Dance from the University of Calgary. Her desire to better understand dancer health eventually brought her back to the University of Calgary to complete a Master of Science in Kinesiology specializing in sports medicine, where her research explored injury trends among private studio dancers across Alberta.

Whether working with dancers, athletes, or everyday movers, Extension invites you to come as you are and explore how movement can work for you. The focus is on training the body, expanding movement vocabularies, and discovering what your body is capable of where joy and curiosity lead the way. No matter what activity you like to do (dance, strength training, or any other form of activity), enjoyment is essential for engagement. Alli’s philosophy emphasizes proper form, efficient movement, and body awareness, but always through a lens of curiosity and fun. Movement is not a chore; it is an opportunity.

For dancers, Extension offers a refreshing perspective. Rather than centering performance, filming, or mainly combinations, Alli focuses on technique foundations, creative exploration, and understanding what your body can do. It is dance for the sake of dancing, training the body to move well, challenging the mind and body, and discovering personal expression without the pressure of an end goal. Performances are wonderful, but they are not the only measure of success. At Extension, the process of learning, growing, and moving is what matters; the joy is in the journey.

Extension is also shaped by inclusivity. Dancers and movers are welcomed as they are, encouraged to work within their abilities, given space and opportunity to explore creativity, and guided on how to build a strong technical base and optimal movement patterns. It is a philosophy that values progress over perfection, curiosity over competition, and sustainable movement over short-term outcomes.

At its core, Extension Dance & Kinesiology reflects Alli’s love of dance and movement. It is a place where passion meets evidence; where dancers and movers can learn, grow, and train with confidence, supported by knowledge that keeps them strong, safe, and inspired.
